No doubt you want to be a professional singer, but what would be your second choice as a career?
I would be a farm girl on an organic produce farm. Maybe I'm romanticizing it.
You're a vegetarian. Why the fuck is that? Is it because you're poor?
Because meat is pretty cheap if you go to Chinatown.
Chinatown meat is full of additives. Actually, I just think the concept of eating meat is wrong. I'm sure we'd all get grossed out at the thought of eating a human carcass (except for those online nuts who WANT to be eaten), so why should we eat the carcasses of other animals? Which brings me to milk. Who on earth looked at a cow and said: "I'm gonna drink that animal's boob juice!"? Kind of twisted, don't you think?
What's twisted is picking broccoli over a drumstick at a buffet. How did you decide on "Moulann" over "Little Mermaid" or even "Pocahontas"?
Ha, ha. I decided on Mulan b/c she gets the hottest guy on Disney. I have thing for dudes with hair. Actually, my granny took my birthday to a Chinese numerologist who came up with two names: “Moulann” and “Isha”. My mom picked the former for nostalgic reasons: the name means, “to be immersed in the mountain mist." She used to be a mountain climber and it reminded her of a morning where she was immersed in a lake’s mist high in the mountain. Yes, shoot me for the long, wordy and picturesque description.
With your fame on Internet sites, do you ever get recognized on the street?
People recognize me when I least expect it. - I must admit that sometimes, it's kind of awkward. One of the funniest instances was when I ran into these guys who looked pretty familiar at a club. They were like "Hey, you're Moulann right? I saw your website and realized that I have a videotape of you at one of our house parties a few years ago!" My first question was, "Was I doing anything embarrassing?"
How do you feel that your songs bring back the most painful fucking memories of people's lives right back into the present so that they have to go through all that pain once more and as soon as they get home, rifle through their memory shoebox of "The One"?
I'm glad that most people can relate to my music and that most painful experiences are universal. It makes me feel like we're one big family.
I see. So you're a sadist who likes inflicting pain and watching them writhe. Nice! Lip gloss or lip stick?
Er... Kiss My Face Organic Apple Lip Balm.
Britney Spears or Christina Aguilera?
"Toxic," by the way, is so cool. But getting to your question: Britney's boobs, bank account and videos. Christina's waist, Mulan gig and vocal technique.
No, I meant in terms of who you would sleep with.
Er… if I had to pick, probably Britney then I’d tell the tabloids.
Which Backstreet Boy reflects the type of man you like? Which Spice Girl do you relate to the most?
Hm... I can't decide on the Backstreet Boys - but definitely not the blond one. I can be a combination of the 4-5 Spices at different times of the day. Now YOU tell me which Spice girl reflects the type of woman you like and which Backstreet Boy you can relate to the most!
Actually, I’m most like Scary Spice and would want AJ the most, because bad boys rock my world. Do you find Nicholas Cage sexy? Many girls do and I just don't understand that phenomenon.
I don't find him sexy now - maybe if I were a little older... but I like the characters he portrays. Face Off was one of my favourite movies back in the day.
How do you maintain your figure to fit into those tight-ass jeans you’re always wearing?
I am a completely sedentary, but I should get off my ass, eh!
Are you still nervous when you get on stage to perform? What methods do you use to rest your nerves?
I get nervous depending on who’s in the audience. But I can’t tell you who makes me nervous. I try consciously to breathe deep when I’m freaking out, but my natural coping mechanism is to empty the bladder excessively.
Can you give me the phone number to that really hot friend of yours?
All my friends are hot, so I don’t know who you’re referring to.
Come on, that's what all women say. You're like Caucasians with yellow fever -- you can't tell the attractive Asian women from the unattractive ones.
Haha. I guess girls and guys see different things when they look at girls. But really, I try to think like a guy when I assess girls. I’m not always right though.
Because of your talent, do you obsessively hog the mic at Karaoke joints?
I hardly go Karaoke b/c it’s smoky.
Do you sing in the shower? Could you send a tape of it? Video, that is.
Only if you send me a video footage of you naked and humping a lamppost.
What's your favourite song at the moment?
My favourite song at the moment is Jason Mraz’s “Halfway Home” on his live album. It’s such a simple yet beautiful song.
Give me a quick list of your inspirations.
Too many to list… although I will point out Bjork, but then she’s everyone’s inspiration, so it doesn’t make this response very special does it? There is list too extensive for me to be quick, but I’ll try to name a few. Jason Mraz, John Mayer, and Ani DeFranco amongst so many others.
At what point would you be happy with your singing career? (This is really a personal question -- I was dating a singer before who wanted to make it HUGE. I thought singers sang to sing, not to make it big, so it really confused the shit out of me. Like would you be content singing 3 nights a week at a Jazz bar and selling CDs out of the trunk of your car? It's like me and design/writing -- I'm happy just doing it and whatever money that comes out of it is just icing. So my ex was a greedy psychotic fucking whore, right? Right?)
I’d already be satisfied if my music career could be self-sustaining where I wouldn’t have to take money out of my own pocket to record and tour, but I’d be really if I can make a living as good a living with my music as I could if I were doing another job that I was qualified for. I don’t think it’s realistic for singers to think they’ll make it huge unless they can blow everyone else out of the water. Good singers are a dime a dozen true musicianship is more rare, but talent is still abundant. I think the most you can realistically hope for is to be able to make somewhat of a name for yourself and have respect from peers. If you work your ass off, you might make it kind of big, but it’s still a shot away from huge. There are millions of bands trying to make it as we speak. The odds of “making it” in a Britney kind of way are lower than winning the lottery.
Is every song on your album somehow autobiographical, or are there fillers here and there, where you just like the juxtaposition of this word next to that?
There is a lot of autobiographical material. Sometimes there songs based on situations that I find my friends in. Other times, I’ll be inspired by some poignant feeling to write about a potential situation. I usually write when I’m in emotional turmoil because there’s more need for me to let it out.
Well if you ever need a song about dating a Korean guy with an enormous penis, I’m here for you. Anything you want to tell your audience?
Thanks so much to everyone who took the time to listen and support. It means so much to me and all artists trying to make it on their own terms. Lastly, trees are good because they give us air to breathe and we all like to breathe so, be good to trees.
